I’m a Sri Lankan-Canadian artist based in Toronto, Ontario. During the day, I’m a full time Art Director, but at night, I’m a multi-media artist! I’ve been doodling for over a decade and I’m a big advocate for creativity and its benefits for the mind. There’s something powerful about taking your ideas and bringing them into existence. My Journey to Becoming an Artist
In February of 1996 I was born in Toronto, Ontario. I was a curly-headed kid that loved to doodle and play with her barbies. Despite loving dolls, I was quite the tomboy.
I became obsessed with animals and fed the feral cats in my neighbourhood. I also read the animal books at the library and decided I would become a vet. One time, I grabbed a kitten off the street to bring to my school’s show and tell. Sadly, I was sent to the principal's office for bringing in a “wild” animal and one of the teacher's adopted the kitten.
My sister brought home a graphic novel called “Prince of Tennis” and that was my first introduction to Manga. Fascinated by the art style, this sparked my interest in shojos and anime. Soon after I discovered Kpop as well (shoutout to Super Junior). Manga inspired me to start illustrating characters,
In the summer, I realized I wanted to have an art related career. I spent my entire summer vacation doodling characters and outfits. I told myself I would become an animator but once I found out that animators drew 24 illustrations for only one second of animation, I ran for the hills. Maybe, I’ll be an illustrator…?
After my gap year, I went to Seneca for Graphic Design for 3 years.
During this time, I loved watercolor art and traditional media. I spent my free time drawing my O.Cs(original characters) and daydreaming about having my own webcomic. I also briefly had an interest in voice acting as well—calm down Roothie, stop putting on all these hats!!
I decided to give digital art a try and purchased my first ipad as well as the drawing app, Procreate.
This was around the same time I started working as a graphic designer for a menswear company (This is currently my full time job). I spent the next 4 years trying to figure out my art style.
I dove head first into my art studies and experimented with colour and lighting. I had never attempted to draw backgrounds before this year and really pushed myself to be better.
Towards the end of the year, I gave needle felting a try and it became my newest art passion. I started dipping my toes back into traditional media and picked up sewing as well.
Improving my needle felting skills was my main goal for this year and that's all I created. I experimented with different mediums and combined them with needle felting to create unique sculptures. I was trying new things to see what I could do!
I finally discovered my artistic aesthetic and purpose. It was also the year AORTA was born. I started working on the Roothie Doodle’s brand and figuring out how I wanted to move forward with my newfound art purpose. Currently, I’m developing this site into a resource where I can help others like me who also want to grow their creative mind and follow their heart!
